Bill & Ted Face the Music - An Honest Review 7/10

A most bodacious movie, Bill & Ted Face the Music was the feel-good throwback to the 80s classic that we all needed during what I can safely say is a very uncertain time for cinema and film releases. Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves reprise their roles as Bill & Ted, two music loving goofballs who clearly haven’t grown up yet. Set in present day, the leads are still pursuing their hopeless music career as the Wyld Stallyns, facing yet another time bending dilemma that could in fact destroy everything as we know it in a cataclysmic event!.

Playing heavily on the nostalgia, I thought that this was a pleasantly upbeat comedic feature with some nice touches that take us back to the movies we originally fell in love with. A few fan-favourite characters make a return, along with some great new ones. As you may have seen in the trailers, the protagonists now have teenagers of their own, and I have to say the casting choice was superb on this front. Both Thea & Billy are 100% what I would expect from the offspring of Bill & Ted. The actresses really took on the characteristics that the original cast really played on, from posture to presentation they really were the female embodiment of the iconic duo.

Sadly, George Carlin was unable to reprise his role as Rufus, and was sorely missed, however there are other future characters introduced into the mix. This was one of my only niggles, as I felt it wasn’t a strong point in the movie. Although the premise of the movie is to unite the world and prevent a catastrophe from happening somewhat in the future, the future characters didn’t add much to the film at all in my opinion. I would also add that there’s a distinct lack of music throughout, so I would say somewhat of a misleading title!

It was enjoyable though, and I think it was a nice change from the other movie releases that I’ve watched this year. A great family friendly movie, some excellent scripting and a few belly laughs for me personally. I would thoroughly recommend a watch, and don’t forget, be excellent to each other.
