Ten Point Podcast Season 2 Pointy Awards Results

As the season draws to a close we can proudly look back at another excellent season of our Ten Point Podcast. But which movies won our hearts? You'll soon find out, as we work our way through the 27 awards that made up our second bi-annual Pointy Awards!

Best Song: Kiss From A Rose - Seal (Vacation)

This was a very highly sought after award, with many nominations for best song from episodes including Blade 2, Mortal Kombat, Vacation, Casper, The Dead Don't Die and more. Ultimately Bruce and Chris decided that this song topped all others for the season, and as such it takes home the Pointy!

Most Unexpected Appearance: Danny John-Jules (Blade 2)

British actor Danny John-Jules appeared as Asad in Blade 2 as part of the Blood Pack, which apparently was the most surprising actor to star in a film of the entire season. Danny is best known as The Cat in Red Dwarf and stars in other TV shows, so not quite as well known in the movie industry comparatively. Yes he did star in a handful of films before this, with a few voicing parts in Labyrinth, a role in Little Shop of Horrors and of course Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Worst Costume: Scramble Suits (A Scanner Darkly)

I think it was a unanimous vote for this one, as the scramble suits looked as confusing as they were... confusing! You would think they could pick a disguise and stick to it if they were really such a technologically advanced item of clothing. I thought that there were some great contenders in this category but ultimately agreed that this was my least favourite so kudos to the guys for picking the right one.

Worst Special Effects: Light Panel Fight (Blade 2)

The second award of the night for this movie however this was a little bit less of a hurrah and more of a boo! The boys felt that the Light Panel Fight was the worst of all of the special effects used across the movies in our second season. In our first Pointy Awards Blade took home the award for the worst special effects for the blood, so it doesn't come as a surprise that the sequel had similar mistakes again. A lot of Blade 2 was well done, such as the make-up and vampire effects this time around (in typical Guillermo Del Toro fashion), so just the basics that let them down.

Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr (A Scanner Darkly)

Robert Downey Jr takes away an award for the second season in a row! After winning Best Cameo for his appearance in "Chef", I'm really pleased that he has now won Best Supporting Actor for his role. I thought that he was the standout role in A Scanner Darkly, and if I had to use a single word to describe my feelings about the rest of them it would be bof! Maybe if Robert makes an appearance in Season 3 he will snatch the Best Actor award for our next Pointy Awards for the trifecta!

Best Line: Whistler "Yeah, well some of us can't see in the dark, you fucking nipplehead." (Blade 2)

Definitely the funniest line of the season, we all loved Whistler's insult in Blade 2, when pointing out the obvious to Reinhardt portrayed by Ron Perlman. He's wandering the tunnels with a flashlight and apparently that wasn't good since the Bloodpack were trying to attract the mutants rather than scare them off. Of course in typical Kris Kristofferson fashion he bites back with a bit of sass.

Worst Plan: Having all of the best fighters in a tournament (Mortal Kombat)

So the problem with this plan is that the person putting the tournament together; in the hopes of winning it to gain more power and wreak havoc, made it harder for themselves to achieve their goal. Like duh.

Best Fight: Gina Carrano & Michael Fassbender (Haywire)

There were some pretty good fight sequences in the movie selection of Season 2, and I don't think this one was the best, but since I don't get a vote we'll just have to agree to disagree on Haywire's hotel room fight sequence taking home the trophy! Gina Carrano was not particularly enamouring in this movie - it probably doesn't help that she was dubbed over either, and so I think her highlight in the movie was indeed her fight with Fassbender.

Michael Pena Award: How to get away with murder (Gone Girl)

So this award is for the best storytelling, and Gone Girl's how to get away with murder explanation was the winner in this case. I think the movie did well to show us the side of the story that we only get to glimpse right up until the last minute. The first time I saw this movie I thought it was a very clever reveal.

Worst Scene: Party Cancelled/Not Cancelled (Office Christmas Party)

Movies can take scenes, jokes or themes too far, and Office Christmas Party took the absolute biscuit! The party was cancelled, but it wasn't, but it was, but it wasn't. This lasted too long, and we all knew the party would happen anyways, because that is what the movie is about. Definitely could have cut that bit a lot sooner than they did!

Best Actor: Bill Goldberg (Santa's Slay)

Well. I don't think any of us saw this coming. With contenders including Ben Affleck for his role in Gone Girl, Matthew McConaughey for his role in Interstellar and William H. Macy for his role in Fargo, I honestly did not expect Bill Goldberg to win this. I thought Ben Affleck would have been a winner but alas, it was not meant to be. Wrestler turned actor Bill Goldberg was a compelling evil Santa, with an excellent Reindeer companion. He is good at being bad!

Worst Actor: Peter Dinklage (Knights of Badassdom)

This is one of those awards that people don't really want to receive, especially from a podcast award ceremony as prestigious as ours. But Peter Dinklage's appearance as Hung in Knights of Badassdom was deemed the worst of the season. Andrew commented that he is just like that in real life, having once again name-dropped an actor he's had the pleasure of meeting! To be fair the director of the movie expressed disdain for the released version of the movie and blamed the producers for it's very average ratings, so perhaps we would have seen more of the Dinklage we've come to enjoy in his other roles had they not have fluffed it.

Best Inanimate Object: Tumbleweed (Haywire & Vacation)

So the winner of this award made an appearance in two of the movies featured on the Ten Point Podcast this season, the tumbleweed! An absolute scene stealer, the tumbleweed was very highly regarded in both Haywire and Vacation. Yawn...

Good Cop Award: Marge Gunderson (Fargo)

I feel like this is an award that Bruce made for his favourite character in Fargo, but as I really didn't enjoy that movie and thought she added no value to the movie I must express my opinion that she should have been worst cop! Both Bruce and Chris thought that Marge was a great cop, despite not recognising the true culprit and schemer William H. Macy. Although to be fair, there weren't many nominations in this category. I would have chosen Judge Dredd personally, who has a near perfect track record and, after all, he is the law!

Bad Cop Award: Rhonda Boney (Gone Girl)

Everybody agreed that this cop was a pencil pusher who didn't bring anything to the table. A lacking performance by Kim Dickens and a crap investigator. I agreed with this since Marge wasn't an option...

Best Death: Desi Collings (Gone Girl)

In his second movie chosen for the Ten Point Podcast, Neil Patrick Harris starred as Desi Collings; stalker and mega fan of our protagonist (and also antagonist) Amy Dunne. After Amy's unsuccessful attempt to go into hiding and form a new identity; in order to substantiate her plot to frame her husband Nick as a murderer, she makes her way to an old friend who everybody believes to be someone she despises. Her ex boyfriend (shock horror) who's life she ruined. But he's smitten, so he's happy to look after her and shower her with gifts. But things get a bit weird, what with the splooge baby moment (Chris' words not mine) and all. His death is grizzly, but also well planned, so kudos to Amy.

Best Twist: Black Phillip (The Witch)

Not much explaining to do here - best twit goes deservedly to Black Phillip, the aggressive and troubled goat in The Witch who turns out to be the presumed physical manifestation of Satan himself. Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?

Best Scene: Randall's X-Rated Video Order (Clerks)

During this winning scene we see Randall, one of the store clerks in the movies Clerks, rattle off a whole load of X-Rated movie titles in the store. The guys thought that this was particularly funny!

Worst Supporting Character: Zelda Winston (The Dead Don't Die)

The worst supporting character award was given to Tilda Swinton's character Zelda Winston. I know, they didn't put much effort into naming that one did they?! She was found to be the best at being the worst, another award you wouldn't be rushing to collect.

Worst Father Figure: Cooper (Interstellar)

So this was a strange award to give, but it was decided that the season showed us what bad dads look like, and Cooper was the worst. I didn't personally enjoy this movie all that much, and I think his bad parenting was a factor in that because he kept doing things that made me think... why would you make that decision? Pants dad.

Best Actress: Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl)

I think it is particularly funny that Rosamund Pike won worst actress for her part in Doom in our first Ten Point Podcast Pointy Awards, and then went on to redeem herself in Season 2 and beat the rest to win best actress! Good on her!

Worst Actress: Emily Ratajkowski (Gone Girl)

The fifth award of the night to go to Gone Girl, Emily Ratajkowski wins worst actress. She didn't take anything away from the movie, but she certainly didn't add to it. I would say stick to modelling Emily, which you are far better at.

Most Obvious Name: Bloodpack (Blade 2)

This isn't a particularly exciting award, but the fourth of the night for the first pick of the season, Blade 2. Why wouldn't you call a pack of blood-sucking vampires the Bloodpack? I thought it was obvious but well-suited.

Most Underused Actor: Bill Paxton (Haywire)

This fella definitely deserved more screen time. I always find that he adds something special to every movie he's in, even the crap ones. Give Bill a chance! A highlight in this dull movie, deserving of more lines.

Best Hair: Robin Shou (Mortal Kombat)

I mean, another award that wouldn't typically be recognised by any other awards ceremony, best hair. Robin Shou did have magnificent hair in Mortal Kombat, I do agree, but did you guys not see Blade's nifty tribal cut outs in his hair? I mean that was slick!

Now it comes to the two most important awards of the night, which you could have worked out from he scores the guys gave at the end of every episode, but to save you the aggro we announced them anyways!

Worst Film: A Scanner Darkly (6 points total, average score of 2)

Everybody thought that the effect used on the movie was cool but wore thin, and there wasn't even that great of a story to get you through it sadly! Chris has now chosen the worst movie two seasons in a row. Can he make it a third? We will see...

Best Film: Blade 2 (21 points total, average score of 7)

Everyone loved Blade in the first season, and everyone has loved Blade 2 in the second season. Another great pick, this time courtesy of Bruce. We love Wesley Snipes as the half-vampire badass and thankfully Andrew has picked Blade: Trinity as the first movie of Season 3. Do we think that will take the top movie for Season 3 to complete the trilogy? Join us for the next Pointy Awards after next season to find out.

Well that's it folks! A summation of the season with a series of pointless awards that we give out just because we can. Our first episode for Season 3 will be coming soon, so don't forget to tune in!
